We begin with a brief breakdown of how mood rings work. The mood rings are a hollow glass or crystal shell within which are embedded liquid crystals which are sensitive to temperature changes. Modern mood rings contain thin sheet of liquid crystals upon which a clear glass stone is placed. When such a ring is worn by a person as an ear ring or finger ring, bracelet or necklace, it remains in touch with the epidermis of the person. As a result, with the temperature fluctuation in the body, the natural color (usually green) of the mood ring tends to change into blue or red or black, which is a response imparted by the liquid crystal. When a person is under stress the color changes to black and when in happy mood it is towards the bluer side.

A controversy which surrounds this mood rings are their ability to properly judge and display the mental state of a person. There has always been a tug-of-war between the aesthetic compatibility of an object or a topic and its scientific validity. This controversy came into play in the case of mood rings also when the ability of the mood rings to judge and display properly the mental state of a person was questioned upon. There is some scientific explanation to how mood rings work. The liquid crystals consist of highly temperature sensitive molecules. Generally it imparts a green color when it in touch with the normal human body temperature i.e. 820F. With change in temperature, the energy level of the molecules does not remain in its normal ground state and it changes too. As a result, the molecules tend to orient themselves in a particular direction other than the normal. The wavelength of light that is absorbed and reflected in that condition is different from the original and hence a different color is seen.

Suppose a person is in a passionate mood, his blood vessels tend to dilate and his blood temperature increases to a level which excites the molecules of the liquid crystal in such a manner that it absorbs red and green wavelengths and reflect blue or violet blue wavelength of visible light. And this is how mood rings work.
